Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Program (Co-Occurring IOP)

Structured support for alcohol or drug use.

What This Is

A specialised, intensive program for individuals ready to start their recovery from addiction while simultaneously addressing the mental health concerns that often go hand-in-hand with substance use.

Who This Is For

  • You are struggling with chemical dependency and are ready to work toward long-term sobriety
  • You are dealing with “co-occurring” issues, such as anxiety, depression, or mood disorders alongside addiction
  • You need a “step-up” from traditional outpatient care to prevent the need for hospitalisation
  • You have recently completed an inpatient stay and need a structured “step-down” plan to transition home

How It Can Help

  • Build a foundation of coping skills specifically designed for maintaining sobriety
  • Improve both your mental health symptoms and behavioural patterns in one integrated program
  • Learn “Dialectical Behavioural Therapy” (DBT) skills to navigate triggers and life stressors
  • Benefit from a supportive group environment that reduces isolation during early recovery

What to Expect (First Visit)

  • A comprehensive mental health and substance use evaluation to tailor the program to you
  • An introduction to the small group setting where you’ll build skills with peers on a similar path
  • A clear overview of the 10-week curriculum, meeting 3–4 days a week for 3 hours a day
  • An initial individual check-in to establish your personal goals for recovery

What Ongoing Care Looks Like

  • Daily focus on the four pillars of DBT: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Interpersonal Effectiveness, and Emotion Regulation
  • Evidence-based learning through a mix of discussions, psychoeducation, and active practice
  • Access to medication management to support your physical and mental stability
  • Ongoing transition planning to ensure you have the tools for success once the program ends

Is This Right for You?

This is a vital option if you are looking for a flexible, intensive path to recovery that treats the “whole person”—addressing both the addiction and the underlying mental health symptoms at the same time.

Chico & Spokane Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Programs

Like our mental health IOP, our co-occurring intensive outpatient program is for individuals struggling with addiction who are ready to begin the road to recovery. It is aimed towards helping patients overcome their chemical dependency while providing them with the foundational coping skills for long term sobriety. IOP is an intensive therapy model to help support the use of skillful behaviors while improving both mental health and behavioral symptoms within a small group setting. Our Intensive Outpatient Therapy (IOP) offers an intensive interim level of care between outpatient and inpatient therapy- essentially, we offer short-term intensive therapy in a group therapy setting! Our IOP groups provide a step-up level of care from outpatient therapy and hopefully reduce the risk of need for hospitalization. It is a flexible program that meets a variety of needs while providing tools and solutions.

Our IOP groups use a DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy) approach to treatment. Our group curriculum offers a foundational set of skills using evidence-based practices delivered through psychoeducation, activity, discussion, and practice. The DBT skills we teach are delivered in four pillars, with a goal of improving: mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and emotion regulation. Our IOP groups meet 3-4 days a week for 3 hours a day, for a total of ten weeks.
