Why Communicating About Mental Illness Can Be Difficult

People can be extremely hesitant to bring up the topic of mental illness. Sometimes this reticence has to do with their unfamiliarity with the illness itself, but most of the time, this difficulty talking about mental illness comes from the old cultural habit of avoiding the subject. There is also misinformation about what a person with mental illness looks like.

Some might have the stereotypical figure of a schizophrenic person in their head, while others view individuals who suffer from mental illness as objects of tragedy. If someone does share their story of overcoming the pitfalls of their mental illness, they are championed and held in high regard; while this positivity is good, not all people with mental illness fit that narrative. And, when people fail to fit into that narrative box, people can sometimes view the individual as a failure.

For example, the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why depicts a teenager’s descent into depression that ultimately culminates in suicide. Those who have viewed the series and who have never experienced depression themselves expected her to fit the tragic typecast of a depressed person who’s sympathetic enough to want to help. The main character is vindictive and unlikable—much like a real-life person. Instead of perpetuating the stereotype of a tragic figure, the show depicts the main character as a real person with real problems.

While mental illness affects many people, it doesn’t affect everyone the same way. Some people become irritable, distant, unreasonable, and angry. Not all individuals who suffer from a mental illness are easy to be around. This behavior can make it difficult to sympathize with the person struggling, but it doesn’t mean they don’t deserve sympathy anyway.

Not all people understand what it’s like to struggle with a mental illness. To prevent further stigmatizing which dismisses a broad spectrum of ways mental illness can affect people, people should try to be more compassionate, more supportive, and encourage recovery.

Can ECT Treat My Depression?

For many suffering from depression, finding the right combination of medication can be a struggle. Some are prescribed medication for months, only to have their prescription changed, increased, or changed completely because their body rejected the medication. During this process, depressive episodes can seem like a lifetime of misery. Luckily, alterative treatment options can help if your depression has become resistant to medication.

What Is ECT?

Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT) has been used for some time and is generally considered “re-setting” the brain. ECT is often used to treat severe clinical depression and is often used for people with symptoms like hallucinations, suicidal thoughts, or delusions. ECT can be applied when other treatments like psychotherapy and antidepressants do not work. Some other psychiatric or neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease or schizophrenia can also be treated with ECT. During the treatment, electric currents pass through the brain to initiate a short and controlled seizure. ECT can be shown to change brain chemistry, and in turn, begin to reverse the symptoms of several different mental illnesses.

How ECT Works

ECT treatment can be similar to having surgery. You’re put into a gown and taken into a surgical area, but you’re also hooked into machines that monitor blood pressure, heart rate, and other important vital signs. After the muscle relaxant and anesthetic are administered by the anesthesiologist, you’re asked to breathe deeply while the treatment takes its effects. Once you are unconscious, the treatment starts. You are given a careful seizure at your bedside that is carefully monitored by the doctors. When the seizure is over, medications are administered to help you wake back up. Once awake, your vitals are carefully monitored and tracked. After a sufficient period of recovery you may return home and rest. Studies have shown that ECT works for many people who have treatment-resistant depression. A study conducted by the medical journal Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavia found 71% of people who received ECT had a positive response to treatment. Though the treatment can work quickly, about 50% of those who receive it will relapse within several months. Doctors typically advise a medication plan and periodic “maintenance” ECT sessions to help prevent relapse.

Can the Bacteria in Your Gut Cause Anxiety?

Recent research from neurobiologists at Oxford University has uncovered evidence of a potential link between the bacteria in our gut and the quality of our mental health. Though the body of research on the subject has grown in recent years, most of these studies have relied on animal rather than human subjects. Using 45 human subjects, the Oxford study yields new insights between anxiety and bacteria of the gut. Participants took either a prebiotic or a placebo every day for three weeks. At the end of the three weeks, researchers completed several computer tests assessing how the subjects processed emotional information, like positive and negatively charged words.

New Findings

Researchers found that “prebiotics,” supplements designed to boost healthy bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract, may have an anti-anxiety effect. This significant new information suggests that prebiotics may alter how people process emotional information. One test from the study revealed that subjects who had taken the prebiotic paid less attention to negative information and more attention to positive information. When compared to the placebo group, the prebiotic group experienced less anxiety towards negative stimuli. A similar effect has been observed among individuals taking antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications. Another interesting detail emerging from the study is that prebiotic subjects had lower levels of “cortisol,” a stress hormone linked to anxiety and depression.

Why Is This Research Important?

According to the study’s lead author, Dr. Philip Burnet, “prebiotics are ‘food’ for good bacteria already present in the gut. Taking prebiotics, therefore, increases the numbers of all species of good bacteria in the gut, which will theoretically have greater beneficial effects than [introducing] a single species.” Similar findings have been found in other studies. Research conducted by UCLA found that women who got their prebiotics through yogurt consumption exhibited signs of altered brain function when resting or while performing an emotion-recognition task. Dr. Kristen Tillisch, author of the UCLA study, stated, “Our study shows that the gut/brain connection is a two-way street.”

What Does Self-Actualization Mean?

Self-Actualization occurs when a person is able to fully take advantage of his or her talents while being mindful of their limitations. Colloquial usage of the term often refers to an enlightened state of maturity that is characterized by achieving goals, accepting one’s self, and self-assessing in a realistic and positive way. Often associated with humanistic psychologist Abraham Maslow, the “hierarchy of needs” addresses the basic and esoteric needs of humans.

Stages in the hierarchy of needs include:

  • Physiological Needs
  • Safety Needs
  • The Need for Love and Belonging
  • The Need for Esteem
  • Self-Actualization

Only once the most basic human needs have been met can the process of self-actualization begin. Once esteem needs such as self-confidence and self-respect have been met, a person might begin to self-actualize. Achieving self-actualization is not only different for each individual, it is also rare. According to Maslow, only about 1% of the population achieves self-actualization.

Characteristics of Self-Actualization

To be self-actualized individuals, we must reach the apex of human existence. As individuals, we must become everything we’re capable of becoming. Although this realization can occur in numerous ways, self-actualization is usually achieved as the result of sound psychological health and a strong sense of fulfillment. Generally, self-actualized people:

  • Are accepting of themselves and others
  • Maintain meaningful relationships
  • Can exist independently or autonomously
  • Demonstrate the ability to find humor in their own mistakes
  • Are empathetic to the realities of others
  • Exhibit appreciation or childlike wonder regarding the goodness of life
  • Have a grounded sense of purpose and responsibility

Alternative Ways to Achieve Self-Actualization

Not all people strive for self-actualization. Sometimes the influence of institutions and cultures results in differing opinions about what determines a self-actualized state. For example, “person-centered-therapy” suggests that every human being strives for, and has the capacity to fulfill, their own potential. This approach diverges from the “therapist as expert” model and instead moves towards a non-directive, empathic approach intended to motivate the client’s psychological therapy. This form of therapy might appeal to people who have negative or unrealistic expectations or those who find achieving self-actualization to be difficult. However, resolving this sort of self-concept in therapy can potentially help individuals move closer to self-actualization because “person-centered therapy” focuses on the individual’s strengths rather than their shortcomings.
